Rudraksha

The right sacred bead, recommended after chart analysis.

Rudraksha

About this service

Rudraksha are sacred seed-beads, each mukhi (face) carrying its own planetary ruler and deity. Worn correctly, they calm the mind, strengthen weak planetary influences, and offer steady protection. We recommend the specific mukhi, count and wearing method for your chart — never a generic bead sold blind.

Mukhi: what the faces mean

A rudraksha is the seed of the Elaeocarpus ganitrus tree, and the natural clefts running down its surface are its mukhi, or faces. The count of those faces determines what the bead is held to do, because each mukhi carries its own ruling planet and presiding deity.

The five mukhi, ruled by Jupiter and the most common by a wide margin, is the general-purpose bead — calming, broadly beneficial and safe for almost anyone to wear, which is why it makes up most malas. The single mukhi is the rarest and most revered. Between them, each count addresses a particular planetary influence: the two mukhi for the Moon and relationships, the three for Mars and past guilt, the six for Venus and expression, the seven for Saturn and financial stability, the eight for Ketu and obstacles, the nine for Rahu and courage. The higher counts, from ten to fourteen, are correspondingly rarer and more specific.

Because each bead maps to a planet, choosing one is the same calculation as choosing a gemstone: the right mukhi is the one that strengthens the planet your chart wants strengthened, which is not necessarily the weakest one.

Rudraksha as an alternative to gemstones

Rudraksha are the gentler instrument. Where a gemstone amplifies a planet sharply — sometimes uncomfortably so — a rudraksha works more slowly and more forgivingly, and an unsuitable bead is far less likely to cause a strong adverse reaction than an unsuitable stone.

They are also dramatically cheaper. An authentic five mukhi costs a fraction of any astrological gemstone, which makes rudraksha the sensible starting point for clients who want to try a wearable remedy without a significant outlay, and the recommendation of choice where a chart calls for support but not for the force of a stone.

Authenticity, and how beads are faked

The rudraksha market has a serious counterfeit problem, and the fakes are good. Faces are carved into a plain bead to raise a common five mukhi to a rare and expensive count. Two halves of different beads are joined and polished over. Bhadraksha and other unrelated seeds are sold as rudraksha entirely. The higher and rarer the mukhi, the greater the incentive to fake it — which is precisely why one and fourteen mukhi beads warrant the most scepticism.

The defence is laboratory certification: an X-ray or CT scan showing the internal compartments, which correspond to the face count and cannot be carved. A genuine bead's certificate shows the compartments matching the claimed mukhi. Water-float and copper-coin tests, widely repeated online, are folklore and do not distinguish genuine beads from good fakes.

You are told which mukhi to buy, what the certificate must show, and roughly what an authentic bead of that count should cost — so an implausible price is recognisable as the warning it is.

  • 1 to 5 mukhi — the common and general-purpose beads, five mukhi suitable for almost anyone
  • 6 to 9 mukhi — planet-specific support for Venus, Saturn, Ketu and Rahu
  • 10 to 14 mukhi — rare, specific, and the counts most worth certifying carefully
  • Mala guidance — bead count, stringing, and whether a mala or a single bead suits you

Wearing and caring for a rudraksha

A bead is energised before first wearing, with a mantra count and an auspicious muhurat, and both are specified for you. Rudraksha are traditionally strung on silk, cotton or red thread, or capped in silver or gold, and are worn against the skin at the throat or on the wrist depending on the bead and the recommendation.

They are organic and need modest care: keep them out of harsh soap, chlorinated pools and perfume, oil them occasionally with mustard or sandalwood oil to stop them drying and cracking, and do not leave them in a hot car. Traditional observances around cleanliness and diet vary between lineages, and you will be told which apply to your bead and which are optional rather than being handed a list of restrictions to follow blindly.

FAQ

Rudraksha questions

That depends on which planet your chart calls to be strengthened, which is why it is answered after chart analysis rather than from a general list. The five mukhi is broadly beneficial and safe for almost anyone, but the right bead for your specific situation may well be another.
