Mercury Retrograde: Myths, Truths and How to Actually Cope

The planet Mercury against a dark starfield

Mercury retrograde has escaped astrology and become an all-purpose excuse. A missed email, a delayed flight, an argument with a sibling — all of it gets filed under the same heading, usually by people who could not say what the heading means.

It is worth reclaiming the actual idea, which is more modest and considerably more useful.

What retrograde actually is

Mercury does not reverse. Retrograde is an apparent motion: as Earth and Mercury travel at different speeds along their orbits, there are stretches in which Mercury appears, from here, to move backwards against the fixed stars. It is a trick of relative perspective, the same one that makes a slower car seem to drift backwards as you overtake it.

This happens three or four times a year, for about three weeks each time. It is entirely routine, which is the first clue that it cannot reasonably be blamed for everything.

What it is traditionally held to affect

Mercury governs communication, contracts, travel, commerce and the movement of information. Its retrograde periods are associated with friction in exactly those areas — messages going astray, agreements needing revisiting, plans requiring rework.

Notice the shape of that list. It is about revision, not catastrophe. The prefix 're-' is the useful mnemonic: review, revise, reconsider, reconnect, repair.

What to do, and what not to bother with

The sensible advice is unremarkable and would improve your life during any three-week period: read the contract properly, back up your work, confirm the booking, say the thing clearly rather than assuming it was understood.

  • Do re-read agreements before signing rather than after
  • Do allow more slack in travel plans
  • Do use it to finish things you abandoned half-done
  • Don't put your life on hold — three weeks, several times a year, is a lot of life to postpone
  • Don't attribute every setback to a planet; some of it is simply Tuesday

The part that actually matters

A transit affects you according to where it lands in your chart. Mercury retrograde crossing a quiet house in your chart may pass without your noticing. The same retrograde crossing an angle, or the ruler of a house currently under a difficult dasha, is a different matter entirely.

This is why generic retrograde advice is worth so little. The transit is universal; its meaning is personal, and the personal part is the only part that could tell you anything useful.

Frequently asked questions

Not as a blanket rule. The practical advice is to read agreements carefully and confirm details, which is sound at any time. Whether a given retrograde matters for you depends on where it falls in your chart.
