Kundli Matching for Couples Living Abroad: What It Does and Doesn't Decide

Few astrological practices carry as much family weight as horoscope matching, and few are as widely misunderstood. A number is produced, a threshold is invoked, and a relationship is approved or refused — often by people who have never asked what the number measures.
It is worth being precise about this, because real decisions are made on it.
What Guna Milan actually scores
Ashtakoot Milan compares eight factors between two charts, weighted to a total of 36 points. They cover temperament, mental compatibility, physical constitution, and the domestic dynamic between the pair.
Note what is not in that list. The score says nothing about whether two people like each other, share values, want the same life, or treat each other well. It was never designed to.
The threshold, and its abuse
Convention treats 18 of 36 as a workable floor, with higher scores read as more auspicious. This convention has hardened, in practice, into a bureaucratic gate — a number below which a family will not proceed, regardless of anything else in either chart.
That rigidity is not classical rigour; it is a shortcut. The eight factors are not equally weighted in life, a strong score in the wrong areas can flatter a difficult pairing, and a mediocre score can conceal charts that support each other well where it counts. The total is a summary. Reading the summary instead of the charts is exactly the mistake a summary invites.
Manglik dosha, in proportion
Few phrases cause more distress than being told one is Manglik. Mars in certain houses is held to strain the marital house, and the label attaches for life.
In practice, dosha is heavily conditional. It is frequently cancelled by other placements, it is often mirrored in both charts — in which case it substantially neutralises — and its severity varies enormously with the strength and dignity of Mars itself. A great many people who have been told they are Manglik are carrying a heavily mitigated version of it and a great deal of unnecessary fear.
If someone announces the dosha and then immediately proposes an expensive ritual to remove it, you are being sold to.
What matching is genuinely useful for
Used properly, matching is not a gate. It is a briefing. It shows where two temperaments will grind, which periods are likely to place the relationship under load, and what each partner will need to be conscious of.
That is worth having — and it is worth having whether the score was 30 or 14. A couple who already know they intend to marry can still learn a great deal from the comparison, which is why more couples abroad now approach matching after the decision rather than in place of it.

Frequently asked questions
Convention treats 18 out of 36 as a working minimum. It is a guideline rather than a verdict — which of the eight factors match matters more than the total, and a full comparison of both charts is far more informative than the score alone.
