A Gentle Introduction to Chakra Healing

The chakra system maps seven energy centres along the spine, each governing a distinct band of physical and emotional life.
You do not have to accept any particular metaphysics to find the map useful. Treated as a diagnostic vocabulary, it gives you a structured way to ask where, exactly, something feels stuck.
The seven centres
Each centre has a domain, and each has a recognisable signature when it is out of balance.
- Root (Muladhara) — safety, money, belonging; imbalance reads as chronic anxiety about security
- Sacral (Svadhisthana) — desire, creativity, pleasure; imbalance as numbness or compulsion
- Solar plexus (Manipura) — will, confidence, agency; imbalance as passivity or domineering
- Heart (Anahata) — love, grief, connection; imbalance as guardedness or self-abandonment
- Throat (Vishuddha) — expression, truth; imbalance as the things you keep not saying
- Third eye (Ajna) — insight, discernment; imbalance as confusion or rigid certainty
- Crown (Sahasrara) — meaning, connection to something larger; imbalance as emptiness
Start at the bottom
There is a strong tendency to reach straight for the third eye and the crown, because they are the glamorous ones. This is almost always the wrong place to start.
The lower centres are foundational. Someone whose root is in disarray — insecure housing, precarious money, no sense of belonging — will get very little from crown work, and may find it actively destabilising. Ground first. The upper centres are far more available once the lower ones are not screaming.
Simple practices
None of this requires equipment or expense.
- Breath work — slow, even breathing at the site of the centre you are working with
- Grounding — bare feet on ground, weight-bearing exercise, regular meals and sleep, for the root
- Honest speech — for the throat, the practice is simply saying the true thing you have been avoiding
- Meditation — five unhurried minutes daily outperforms an hour once a fortnight
- Journalling — particularly for the heart, where the blockage is usually something unnamed
A word on limits
Energy work sits alongside medical care; it does not replace it. Persistent physical symptoms belong with a doctor, and persistent psychological distress belongs with a mental health professional.
Any practitioner who tells you to stop your treatment is not healing you. Walk away.

Frequently asked questions
The root, almost always. The lower centres are foundational, and work on the upper centres tends to be unproductive or destabilising while basic security, grounding and confidence are unsettled.
