You Don't Know Your Exact Birth Time. Here's What to Do About It.

A clock face against a starfield, representing birth-time rectification

A surprising number of people know their birth date to the day and their birth time to the nearest 'sometime in the afternoon, I think'. This is especially common among people born outside major hospitals, or born in decades and countries where the time was simply never written down.

It is a real problem, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a reassuring one: yes, it genuinely matters, and no, it does not make a reading impossible.

Why two hours changes everything

The ascendant moves through a full sign roughly every two hours. The ascendant sets the first house, and the first house sets all the others.

So an error of a couple of hours does not slightly blur your chart — it rotates the entire thing. The planet that appeared to sit in your house of career now sits in your house of marriage. A reading built on that error will be internally coherent, confidently delivered, and about someone who does not exist.

What rectification actually is

Rectification runs the logic backwards. Instead of using your birth time to predict events, it uses events you already know to find your birth time.

You supply dates that are not in dispute — a marriage, a migration, the loss of a parent, a serious illness, the year a business began or failed. Each of those events should correspond to a particular planetary period and a particular set of transits. Only some candidate birth times produce a chart in which all of them line up. The rest get eliminated.

It is closer to detective work than to divination, and it is slow. It is also the difference between a reading that works and one that merely sounds good.

What to bring

The more precisely dated the events, the tighter the resulting window. Approximate years are usable; exact dates are far better.

  • Marriage or engagement dates
  • Dates of migration or major relocation
  • Job changes, promotions, redundancies, business launches
  • Births of children
  • Deaths of close family members
  • Serious accidents, surgeries or illnesses
  • Property purchases

Be wary of false precision

If a practitioner takes 'roughly midday' and hands back a birth time accurate to the second without asking you a single question about your life, they have not rectified anything. They have guessed, and then dressed the guess in decimal places.

Honest rectification produces a window and a stated confidence in it. Sometimes the honest answer is that the window is still too wide for a fine-grained prediction, and that the reading should stay at the level the evidence supports.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, but with limits. Planetary positions by sign can still be read, while anything that depends on the houses — career, marriage, property — becomes unreliable. Birth-time rectification can usually narrow the window enough to restore the house structure.
